Potential Impact to CalFresh and WIC Customers Due to Federal Government Shutdown

Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, CalFresh and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program benefits for November may be delayed until a federal funding agreement is reached. These programs are essential sources of food assistance for more than 347,000 Riverside County residents and are fully funded by the federal government through the State of California. Each month, the County of Riverside administers over $65 million in CalFresh benefits, helping families access the nutrition they need.

CalFresh Program

  • Any remaining funds on CalFresh EBT cards as of November 1 will remain available until spent.
  • Case information should be kept up to date: Submit all requested forms and reports to avoid delays once funding resumes.
  • Apply or manage benefits online: Visit BenefitsCal.com or call 1-877-410-8827.
  • In-person support available: DPSS Self-Sufficiency offices remain open and are actively processing new applications and updates.

WIC Program

The Riverside County WIC program continues to serve more than 70,000 clients with essential nutrition services. WIC offices are open for both virtual and in-person appointments, and:

  • WIC cards remain active and loaded with food benefits.
  • Staff are enrolling eligible clients daily.
  • Furloughed or unemployed families are encouraged to apply and may receive benefits on the same day.
  • Income eligibility information can be found at www.ruhealth.org/who-qualifies-wic.
